Fuller Lake Skaters Shine at the Vancouver Island Regional Championships

Twenty-two Fuller Lake Skating Club athletes competed in 26 events over the course of the four-day Vancouver Island Regional Championships Competition held in Nanaimo between January 22 and 25. More than 540 figure skaters from clubs across Vancouver Island competed in this event.

The four-day event featured skaters of all ages and levels, with Fuller Lake athletes delivering strong performances throughout the competition.

On Thursday morning, Caitlin Varcoe, Quinn Montgomery, Claire Volk, Isla Fink, Ella Donovan, and Naomi Ferguson kicked off the Competition with the Star 4 Elements. Caitlin soared to a 3rd place closely followed by Quinn and Claire who both earned 4th place.  Isla and Ella placed 5th, while Naomi achieved a 6th place finish in the event.

Fuller Lake was also represented in the Star 4 (Over 13) Freeskate event, where Naomi Ferguson finished 7th.

The weekend brought strong results in Star 4 Freeskate (under 13). Quinn Montgomery earned a 4th place, just off the podium, followed by Caitlin Varcoe in 6th, Claire Volk and Isla Fink in 7th, and Ella Donovan in 8th place.

Charli-Rose Draper represented the Club with confidence and enthusiasm in both Star 3 Elements and Freeskate, earning an Silver in each discipline.

The action continued into Friday morning with the Star 2 Events.  The Fuller Lake Skating Club athletes continued to shine.  Emma Burt was awarded a Bronze in Star 2 Elements and Bronze in her Freeskate, Mila Mueller achieved a Silver in Star 2 Elements and Bronze in her Freeskate, Aria Neis achieved a Silver in Star 2 Elements and Freeskate, Brooke Thomsen earned a Silver in Star 2 Elements and Silver in her Freeskate.  Avery Batty achieved a Bronze designation in her Star 2 Freeskate program.

Friday afternoon saw the older skaters take to the ice including the Star 5 women’s Elements where Tea Searle placed 4th.  Tea continued with a successful showing in both her Star 7 Artistic program where she placed 10th and her Star 5 Freeskate (over 13) where she earned a 9th place.

The Star 1 category was held early Saturday morning. The Fuller Lake Skating Club was proudly represented by Claude Cole, Klara Falk, McKinley Ree, Hannah Wright, Lily Wright, Jacquelyn Côté, and Klara Johnson. McKinley, Hannah, and Klara F each earned Silver evaluations for their performances, while Claude, Lily, Jacquelyn, and Klara J achieved Bronze results, highlighting a strong showing from the club’s youngest skaters.

On Saturday afternoon Mica Torres-Hernandez began her campaign, earning a 9th place in her Star 7 Women Short Program. She followed this with a strong 4th place in the Gold Women’s Artistic event held Sunday.

Fuller Lake’s strength in the men’s events was highlighted by Alex Jensen, who earned a Silver Medal with his 2nd-place finish in the Star 6 Men’s Free Program (Sunday), and followed it with a 4th place result in the Star 7 Men’s Short Program (Saturday).

The Fuller Lake Skating Club celebrates these achievements with our athletes.  It was an exciting and successful weekend.  We are proud of the strong representation and sportsmanship displayed throughout the competition and we thank our Coaches, Kailee Bowman, Jessica Griffiths, and Kennedy Sha, along with all of our skating families for their continued support.

All regularly scheduled programming will be proceeding starting this afternoon.  This means you! All regularly scheduled programs are going ahead as usual. Junior figure, intermediate figure, senior figure, all Canskate, pre-Canskate, and pre-Junior figure are on at regular time. See you at the rink.

Vancouver Island Interclub Competition a smashing Success!

The Fuller Lake Arena was alive with energy November 14–16 as the Fuller Lake Skating Club hosted the Vancouver Island Interclub Competition, welcoming more than 440 skaters from across Vancouver Island. The three-day event featured athletes of all ages and skill levels, with Fuller Lake skaters delivering an impressive showing.

In the youngest divisions, the club’s Star 1 competitors made a strong impact. Avery Batty and Brooke Thomsen skated to Gold in their events.  Emma Burt received a Silver assessment. Hannah Wright, Lily Wright ,Klara Falk, McKinley Ree, and Klara Johnson captured the Bronze.  All of FLSC’s Star 1 skaters skated with poise and enthusiasm, demonstrating the depth of talent in the club’s rising stars. In Star 2, Mila Mueller achieved a Bronze in both Star 2 Elements and Freeskate, Aria Neis was awarded Silver in both her Star 2 Elements and Freeskate and Charli-Rose Draper earned a Gold in her Star 2 Elements and Silver in the Freeskate.  All competitors skated well and represented Fuller Lake with confidence and flair.

The Star 4 Under-13 and 13+ skaters delivered strong performances as well. Caitlin Varcoe and Quinn Montgomery both finished 8th in their groups, while Claire Volk placed 9th and Isla Fink and Ella Donovan tied for 10th. In the 13-and-over Freeskate, Ella Stuart placed 7th and Naomi Ferguson finished 9th. Fuller Lake skaters also excelled in the Star 4 Elements event, with Quinn Montgomery earning Silver, Claire Volk placing 4th, and Naomi Ferguson and Ella Stuart tying for 5th. Ella Donovan, Isla Fink, and Caitlin Varcoe all placed 8th, rounding out strong performances across the group.

Among the Star 5 competitors, Tea Searle had a steady weekend, finishing 7th in Artistic, 4th in Freeskate, and earning Silver in Elements. Mica Torres-Hernandez also had a notable weekend, capturing Bronze in her Gold Womens Artistic event, placing 4th in the Star 8 Womens Free Program, and 7th in the Star 7 Womens Short Program. Jessica Raymond skated gracefully in the Introductory Women Artistic event, earning a solid 4th-place finish.

Fuller Lake’s male skaters also made their mark. Alex Jensen claimed Silver in the Star 6 Mens Free Program, finishing 2nd, and followed up with a 6th-place finish in the Star 7 Mens Short Program.

With strong results across all levels, the Fuller Lake Skating Club celebrated a weekend of dedication, skill, and sportsmanship. Coaches, skaters, and families alike were proud of the club’s performance, highlighting the depth and talent of skaters from Vancouver Island’s south coast.

No PreCan or CanSkate lessons Friday October 31. Figure Skating will run as usual.

Have a safe an happy Halloween night with your little Trick or Treaters.  Other scheduled figure skating will take place as usual.  

Be sure to wear your costumes (and helmets) with no masks on Monday October 27 when FLSC will celebrate with our favourite skating ghouls and goblins.  On Monday there will be pizza by donation (cash only) and complimentary candy for our skaters. It'll be a Spooktacular Time!
